I grew up during Mercury, Gemini, Apollo and Viking. It was soul crushing to see government's monopoly on space development and exploration ossify into the bureaucratic inaction of NaySay. Contrast this with the early entrepreneurial days of aviation. If we had private enterprise pushing the envelope through competition in aerospace as we had in aviation, we'd have well established colonies on the moon and Mars, orbital hotels and even private spacecraft in the same manner that we now have private planes.
