We should be building bog standard probes/landers now, so the next time we notice a new asteroid from interstellar space, we then have a machine to send up right away to meet it, Nothing down for waiting for god knows how many years for one to return.

Regarding the mars rust question: Yes iron oxide rust is present and gives the soil and rock a red color but most of the iron that is on mars is still in the reduced metallic state. The biotic oxidation that happened on earth to form banded iron deposits has not happened to mars. Yet. 😉
