I disagree, I think if we were to have a Carrington level event, it would be immediately obvious. Your phone would not turn on, Your car would not start, nothing electronic would work. According to FEMA, a nationwide power outage lasting a year or more would kill 95% of the population.

My understanding is, the primal fear of zombies derives from the delirium and irrational aggression exhibited by people who've become infected with rabies. It's a contagious disease spread by scratching and biting, it causes brain damage, and it causes desperate hunger and thirst because the throat muscles are paralyzed so every attempt to swallow causes choking. (hence the old name "hydrophobia".)
